Shared Podcast – The Unintended Consequences of Shock Collars

Shared Podcast – The Unintended Consequences of Shock Collars

In this podcast of The Woof Meow Show from October 21, 2017, Don and Kate discuss electronic shock collars. While Don and Kate would never recommend using a shock collar on a dog for any reason, they recognize that not everyone who uses a shock collar on their dog does so understanding the harm it can cause. Sadly, often the companies that sell and manufacture shock collars do not provide you with all of the information you need to make an informed decision.

This show addresses the following questions;
• What is a shock collar?
• How are shock collars used?
• How does a shock collar change a dog’s behavior?
• What makes the use of a shock collar inappropriate?
• What do experts say about shock collars? and
• What can people concerned about a dogs well-being do to help prevent dogs from getting shocked?

Pets are cognitive, intelligent creatures that experience emotions such as fear, anxiety, and joy. They are subject to the same laws of applied behavior analysis (ABA) as any other living organism.

According to psychology professor, Dr. Susan Friedman, who has pioneered the application of ABA to captive and companion animals: “Punishment doesn’t teach learners what to do instead of the problem behavior. Punishment doesn’t teach caregivers how to teach alternative behaviors.

Punishment is really two aversive events – the onset of a punishing stimulus and the forfeiture of the reinforcer that has maintained the problem behavior in the past.” (Friedman, 2010).

Shared Blog Post – The Unintended Consequences of Shock Collars

Electric shock collars used to keep dogs in the yard, to stop dogs from barking, and to train a dog remotely are not necessary and can cause considerable physical and emotional harm to a dog. That is why both the Pet Professional Guild (PPG) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) have both taken the position that shock collars should never be used on any dog for any reason. Welcome to the Shock Free Coalition of Maine Website and Blog

Welcome to the Shock Free Coalition of Maine Website and Blog

This website and blog ( www.ShockFreeME.org) is a collaboration of members of The Pet Professional Guild (PPG) and other dog lovers and pet care professional who reside in the state of Maine. We have taken the Shock-Free Coalition pledge,  “…an initiative that aims to build an international movement committed to eliminating shock devices once and for all in the care, training and management of pets.” –  https://www.petprofessionalguild.com/Sign-The-Pledge

Members of the Shock-Free Coalition of Maine are working together to educate pet parents, and pet care professionals about the importance of ensuring pet animals live in nurturing and stable environments to better prevent behavior problems. In this effort, it is our position that the use of electrical stimulation, or “shock” or “e-collars,” to train and/or modify the behavior of pet animals is not necessary for effective behavior modification or training and damaging to the animal. We believe that the care and training of a pet must be free of pain, fear, and force. We also advocate for pets that cannot speak for themselves, to make their life free of abuse.
